AN Endeavour Hills mother has found a new passion for fitness as she trains for her first half marathon.
Gina Harrex is set to take on the challenge in the 2010 Gold Coast Airport Marathon, where she will run 21.1 kilometres.
The 49-year-old mother of three and full-time nurse said she enjoyed being active – but had never taken on a serious run.
“When I was younger, I played basketball at the Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre and joined as a member in 2001,” she said.
“One of the staff members said I should, and could, do a half marathon.
“I never thought I could do something like that, but after thinking about it, I decided to give it a go.
“I have nothing to lose by trying.”
Ms Harrex has been training five days a week to prepare for the challenge.
As part of her training, she is presently taking part in her second YMCA Challenge Fitness Camp, together with her daughter Melissa, and recently completed the 13.3 kilometre ‘Puffing Billy’ race.
“The staff at the centre have been so motivating and supportive,” she said.
“They make me feel like I can do anything and always push me to keep getting better. I am really enjoying feeling fitter and stronger.”
YMCA Programs Director at EHLC, Nicky Brown, said Ms Harrex had become an inspiration to other members in the community.
“Gina’s results since becoming a member have been amazing, especially in the past year,” she said.
“She has achieved so much with changes in her appearance and energy due to her hard work and determination.”
