‘Pulse of the Nation’ gave locals the chance to have their heartbeat recorded, which will be used to create the beat for the official Socceroos World Cup bid song. Recent Winter Olympic gold medallist Lydia Lassila was at the shopping centre on Thursday 6 May to have her heartbeat recorded, using a special digital stethoscope.
The recordings will add a unique beat to the official team song, which is being written and performed by the Rogue Traders.
Up to 100 heartbeats will be added to the recording, which will be available online from Monday and on the Rogue Traders upcoming album ‘Night of the Living Drums’.
The team song will be played at the send off match on Monday night at the MCG.
The names of all people who donated heartbeats will be published in a commemorative book and officially presented to the Qantas Socceroos in South Africa during their 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Westfield and FFA chairman Frank Lowy said it was a fantastic initiative to build excitement and national unity.
“It will help recreate the same level of involvement and excitement we saw in 2006,” he said.
