Drop-in driver

By Bridget Cook
A HAMPTON Park father said he would call on Casey Council to install speed humps on Lesley Drive, after a car ploughed through the front of his home on Sunday night.
Ameen Mahamooth, his mother, his wife and two daughters were watching television in their lounge room when a driver crashed through the window of his four-year-old daughter’s bedroom just after 6.30pm.
Mr Mahamooth said his daughter, Fajer, had been playing in the bedroom just minutes before it was destroyed.
The lounge room was just four metres away from where the car came to a halt.
“I heard like a skid noise and then just a big bang,” Mr Mahamooth said.
“We were a little bit shocked at first and didn’t know whether to run or if it was safe to move from the lounge.
“We didn’t have a clue what it was … at first I thought it could have been an earthquake or something.
“Slowly I went and saw a white car in the room, through the window and part of the brick wall.”
Mr Mahamooth said some neighbours were already at the scene, trying to get the driver out.
He said he would now take action to try to prevent the same thing from happening again.
“It’s all families that live around here,” he said.
“Especially evening time and then again late at night I’ve heard and seen people doing burnouts.
“While it is a 60km/h zone, there are drivers who do at least 80km/h, up to 100 km/h along the road.
Mr Mahamooth said while he had only lived in the Lesley Drive home for three years, his neighbours had noticed the problem before then.
“I was having a chat with the neighbours after the accident, and they said they had tried to get speed humps in the area before,” he said.
“It is a high risk area.
“We were just waiting for something to happen.”
Mr Mahamooth said they were lucky no-one was hurt this time.
“The only thing was that my daughter was upset as she lost some valuable things, her toys were destroyed,” he said.
The damage bill was expected to be about $12,000.
Mr Mahamooth said he would like to thank his neighbours, the police and SES for their assistance.
