THERE was more than fish and chips cooking at Fab Fish on Friday night, when a fire broke out in the Berwick shop.
The Berwick Fire Brigade was called to the fish and chip shop at Parkhill Plaza about 7.15pm.
It is believed the fire broke out behind the deep fryer and then spread up onto it.
After failed attempts by the workers to put the fire out, the shop was evacuated.
Berwick CFA captain Alan Boyd said upon arrival smoke had filled the shop and fire was building in the cooking area.
“The fire was extinguished using dry chemical fire extinguishers,” he said.
“Extensive checks were made to ensure the blaze hadn’t spread further through the roof or the rangehood.”
He said the fire had the potential to be much worse.
“CFA units got there in the nick of time and stopped the fire from spreading and engulfing the rest of the shop,” he said.
Four units from Berwick and one from Narre Warren attended the blaze.
