IN AN entertaining, free-flowing encounter Casey Comets pipped next-door neighbours Berwick City 3-2 at Comets Stadium.
It was the first time the two teams had met and the three points up for grabs were crucial for both sides.
Berwick was seeking their first win of the season to avoid relegation back into Division Three and Casey was looking to remain in touch with the breakaway group on top of the ladder.
Berwick jumped out early and had three clear chances to score in the opening 15 minutes, but were denied each time.
Momentum quickly swung in favour of the home team when strong play at the top of the box by captain Tony Saunders opened a path for Brendan Elmazovski to run into. Drawing the defence, Saunders fed the ball to Elmazovski who was able to run in for the first score.
Ten minutes later a tempting cross in front of the box saw goalkeeper Bobby Pejkovic give away a costly free kick for blatantly fouling Comets striker David Terek.
Comets went 2-0 up as a result of the ensuing spot kick to Saunders that tucked nicely into the left corner.
But Berwick was not to be outdone and Adam Ewin scored the first of his two goals to lead his team into the sheds trailing by one goal.
After half-time Casey added another goal, when Elmazovski intercepted a blind turn by a Berwick defender to go 3-1 up but the lead was pegged back only moments later when Ewin slotted his second goal.
Sneaking in behind the defenders on the left side, Ewin pounced on a bouncing ball and slipped it past the advancing keeper.
In a frantic 20 minutes, Casey managed to hold the slight lead to earn their third win in the month of May.
Also blossoming in the month of May is Provisional Two side Endeavour United who rounds out the month with two wins and two draws with the latest result being a 4-1 belting of Skye United at Reema Reserve..
Prior to the match, the second-placed Skye were two games clear of Endeavour United but the upset win shoots Endeavour within striking distance of the promotion zone.
There were no such fortunes for the Kings who dropped two positions with their 2-2 draw against Caulfield Cobras at Betula Park.
In Provisional One Doveton has reeled in a 0-1 deficit at half-time to walk away 2-1 victors over Warragul at Waratah Reserve.
Wayne Schembri scored both goals for the home team as they remain middle of the ladder with three wins and three losses.
