EMERGENCY crews are amazed the driver of a waste collection truck escaped without serious injury after his truck overturned in Berwick.
Police, ambulance and firefighters were called to Mansfield Street shortly after 11am on Monday, initial reports claiming the driver was trapped.
Berwick Fire Brigade captain Alan Boyd said firefighters were relieved to find the man had escaped from the cabin.
“He was shaken but not seriously injured,” Capt Boyd said.
Capt Boyd said it was believed the truck was heading along the old Princes Highway towards Narre Warren and turned into Mansfield Street, overturning moments later and bouncing on its side along the wrong side of the road.
“Thankfully, there were no other vehicles in the path of the truck or the situation may have been quite different,” Capt Boyd said.
Large amounts of diesel fuel and hydraulic oil spilled onto the road, but the cargo of recycling material remained intact.
