Run up to retiring

CASEY resident Brian Regan believes a successful transition from the workforce to retirement should be by choice, and not by chance.
Planning for retirement is said to be a daunting and challenging task and to help people nearing retirement, or those who have recently retired, the City of Casey is holding a “Transition to Retirement” seminar, presented by National Seniors Australia.
The free seminar will be held on Wednesday 23 June at the City of Casey Civic Centre in Narre Warren at 7pm.
Mr Regan, the City of Casey Ageing Positively Champion, made the decision to retire at the age of 55 when he was 45-years-old.
“I made the decision to retire at 55, as this was the age that superannuation funds could be rolled into retirement streams, giving me a 10-year timeframe to plan,” said Mr Regan.
“Throughout those years, I was guided by a financial adviser, and when I reached 55, it was clear that the figures presented were well short of my expectations and that extra contributions were needed.
“So two years later, I retired from my position as a general manager in the steel processing industry and began my retirement.”
Mr Regan said people planning to retire should work closely with an accredited financial adviser to develop a financial plan.
City of Casey mayor Lorraine Wreford said as Victoria’s most populous municipality, it was predicted that the growth in the number of older people in Casey would be among the highest in the state over the next decade.
“For anyone planning for their retirement, or anyone who has recently retired and is unsure about their future, the “Transition to Retirement” seminar is a necessity,” she said.
The seminar will provide an opportunity for residents to get a wide range of information and resources to help them plan for all aspects of retirement including lifestyle, family, accommodation and financial stability.
The seminar will be facilitated by Basil La Brooy, a qualified financial adviser, and the Victorian state manager of National Seniors Australia Arnold Bats.
Once the hard work is out of the way, Mr Regan believes there’s nothing left to do but relax and enjoy the benefits of a well-planned retirement.
“Retirement has given my wife Margaret and I the chance to focus on life’s important things, such as family, and given us the freedom to do what we want,” he said.
For bookings call the City of Casey on 9705 5200 by Friday 18 June.
