NARRE Warren Rotary Club members gathered last week to present this year’s Norm Barr Award to 20-year-old Gary Anderson.
The Pakenham resident won the award – a plaque and a $500 cheque – during Wednesday night’s Rotary meeting at the Fountain Gate Hotel.
The award is handed out to the most outstanding student in the electronics department at Chisholm TAFE in Berwick each year, in memory of the late Norm Barr, who died from bowel cancer at the age of 54.
Mr Barr was a past president at the Rotary Club of Narre Warren.
Rotarian Richard Edwards described Mr Barr as a family man who loved Rotary.
“He was a great guy and a good friend,” he said.
Roger McGill, another member of the club, described Mr Barr as a “true family man”.
“It’s tragic when a man’s life is cut so short. He was a great ambassador for Australia,” he said.
Mr Barr’s son, James, presented Mr Anderson with the award, saying it was a reward for his hard work and dedication.
Mr Anderson said he was ecstatic about taking home the Norm Barr award.
“I was surprised and honoured to win it,” he said.
