THE tables have turned in State League Provisional Two with many top sides falling victim to the underdog in round 10 last week.
Third-placed Endeavour United slipped up to last-placed Caulfield 2-1 while Berwick Kings stunned Ashburton.
In the biggest upset of the season, the Berwick Kings toppled the previously undefeated Ashburton 2-1 at Betula Park.
The Kings entered the game with only two wins from nine matches and needing a win to remain clear of the drop zone but not even Kings coach Sasha Cohadzic gave his team much hope of defeating the undefeated.
But Cohadzic believes his Kings have turned a corner in terms of discipline.
Saturday’s game had the potential to highlight the discipline issues plaguing the Kings’ season – instead, it was their opponents who felt the heat of undisciplined acts.
Two red cards and eight yellow cards were handed out to Ashburton for arguing while Berwick was given only two yellow cards.
“The referee came into the rooms before the game and told everyone he would not tolerate any talkback so I said to the boys ‘if we stick to discipline and do our job individually we will get a result’. And that is what happened,” Cohadzic said.
Previously, Cohadzic has been forced to bench players and use other punitive methods to punish his team which has lacked discipline on and off the field.
But on Saturday, Cohadzic saw a change among his players.
“They realise there is no other way than the way I say,” Cohadzic said.
“I am big on professionalism and discipline, even in the Provisional leagues, and we have not been disciplined and that’s why the results have not been coming.
“But they are settling down now and I don’t believe our team will be at the bottom of the ladder for long,” Cohadzic said.
Ex-Kingston City striker Dejan Blanusa scored both goals for the Kings as he continues to impress since making the transition from Kingston three weeks ago.
Dragon Marjanac has also added to the Kings’ depth since following Blanusa from Kingston and arriving at Betula Park three weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Endeavour United missed out on an ideal chance to enter the promotion zone with their 2-1 loss to Caulfield at home.
Endeavour went into the first break up 1-0 thanks to a Jorge Florindo goal but conceded two goals to remain in third position on the ladder.
In Provisional One Doveton has scraped a 1-1 draw against Monbulk at Monbulk Recreation Reserve.
In Division Two Casey Comets put on a goal-kicking display when they defeated Doncaster 5-2 at Anderson Park.
Farai Murwira booted two for the visitors while youngster Brendan Elmazovski and Negus Henry got among it on the scorers’ list.
Also in Division Two Berwick City was handed a 3-0 defeat by Diamond Valley at Partington Flats.
