Cubby with right sounds

STUDENTS at Berwick Fields Primary School are becoming eco friendly as they learn about sustainable building and architecture.
The students in grades prep to six are taking part in the Eco Cubby Project, which involves a series of hands-on seminars run by environmental education teacher Adam Surmacz and architect Fiona Lew.
Mr Surmacz said the students would design a cubby and learning space as part of the project.
“The students are thrilled to be part of the experience and eager to get building,” he said.
“Some of them have already been developing drawings with their families at home.”
Mr Surmacz said the project aimed to develop student understanding of building and architecture with a particular emphasis on environmental issues.
“It’s a great chance for students with an interest in sustainability and construction to come together and share ideas and extend their learning,” he said.
“Some of what we are learning is already part of the lives of students, including solar panels, native gardens and water tank, which exist in our school. The Eco Cubby Project will build on that with other concepts, such as using recycled materials in exciting ways.”
Principal Stephen Wigney said the school was excited to be involved with the Eco Cubby Project.
“Our research of how best to prepare students for the 21st century highlights the importance of providing engaging, authentic learning opportunities and Eco Cubby is a great example of this,” Mr Wigney said.
“Students will develop English, mathematics, problem solving and communication skills, as well as having great fun at the same time.”
