A 21-year-old man had a VCR thrown at him and was punched in the face during an attack by three men in Cranbourne last month.
Detective Senior Constable Paul Stow, from the Casey Crime Investigation Unit, said the Cranbourne man got off a train at Merinda Park station at 1am on Saturday 24 July.
He was walking east along Thompsons Road when he noticed a red 1994 Mitsubishi Magna, registration unknown, pull up beside him.
Det Sen Const Stow said three men got out of the car and asked the man for a “smoke”.
The man ignored them and kept walking, and then one of the men punched him in the face, causing him to fall over.
One of the other men then picked up a VCR from a hard-rubbish pile on the nature strip and threw it at the man, hitting him in the chest.
Det Sen Const Stow said the victim stood up and swung his backpack around to defend himself and ward off the attackers, who threw other items before driving off in their car.
Anyone with information should call Detective Stow at the Narre Warren police station on 9705 3114.
