ALKIRA Secondary College has taken out a top honour – the Victorian School Design Award for Best Secondary School.
The Cranbourne North school received the award based on its learning, community and ecologically sustainable design.
Alkira Secondary College has a performing arts building, science and technology building, an indoor gymnasium and a topline information and communication technologies (ICT) centre.
Officially opened at the beginning of this year, the school was designed by architects Hayball and Gray Pucksand.
College principal Ian McKenzie said he was delighted with the award.
“The award demonstrates that teaching and learning spaces can be fun and exciting spaces,” he said.
“All spaces are teaching and learning spaces.
“The government needs to be congratulated on the Public Private Partnership process. It is world-class, delivering a state of the art school.”
Narre Warren South Labor MP Judith Graley said that Alkira was a worthy winner of the award.
It was, she said, “a wonderful school with an expert design.
“Alkira Secondary College was one of my biggest commitments at the last election, and I am pleased that we have delivered the best possible school to our local community,” she said.
“The Brumby Labor Government delivered Alkira Secondary College because we believe that our young people deserve the best start in life.”
Alkira was one of nine new schools the Victorian Labor Government had built in the Narre Warren South electorate, she said.
