Walk your way to work

EMPLOYEES are encouraged to leave the car in the garage on 1 October and walk to work.
Put simply, Walk to Work Day helps workplaces support their employees to include regular walking in their daily routine, leading to a generally healthier, more productive and creative workforce. Walking also improves the environment by reducing car dependency.
Businesses looking for ways to support staff and improve productivity by encouraging regular exercise can register as a Walking Workplace.
Individuals who “pledge to put their feet first” will be in the running to win holidays and shoes. The website link is www.walk.com.au
To mark Walk to Work Day, the Star Newspaper Group is offering a $250 Wotif.com prize to readers who send in the most creative short story (50 words or less) about their walk to work – whether it be the interesting route you take, the things you encounter on the way or the quirkiest way you incorporate walking into your work day.
Mark Arneil, manager at Casey RACE in Cranbourne East, has already signed up for the walk to work initiative.
The Narre Warren South resident said it was a “great” event, and encouraged others to take part.
“Walking to walk is what the YMCA is about,” he said.
“We promote strong people, strong families and a strong community, and this is a community event.”
Entries for the short story competition must be sent via email to melissa.meehan@starnewsgroup.com.au by Friday 24 September.
