STUDENTS from Trinity Catholic Primary School in Narre Warren kept things local with their annual junior musical recently.
Called A Journey Through Australian Music, the musical told the story of 11 witty Australian animals learning about the country’s most famous songs.
The animals, played by older students, were joined on stage at Robert Blackwood Hall by the school’s Prep to Grade 4 classes, who did their best renditions of Kylie Minogue, John Farnham and other Australian icons.
And while none of the students in Grade 3/4 class were around when Midnight Oil sang ‘Beds are Burning’, that didn’t stop them from donning bald caps in tribute of lead singer Peter Garrett.
Trinity middle school teacher Olivia Raffa said the night was a celebration of great Australian music and it’s most beloved artists.
“We wanted to teach our kids about the songs that made history here. They may not have heard of all of the bands, but they really enjoyed singing all of them,” she said.
“They practised so hard and on the night you could tell that really paid off. They performed beautifully. Hollywood should look out because I think we have some future stars in our midst.”
A Journey Through Australian Music was written by Grade 5 student Taylah Rzepski, who penned the story and the animals as part of a class assignment.
Taylah then directed her fellow classmates through rehearsals and helped out on performance night by managing the backstage crew.
Ms Raffa said Taylah showed a commitment and motivation that was beyond her years.
“Taylah is incredibly talented and we were so proud of her. Actually, we’re so proud of everything the students did. In the end, this musical was about them and they were completely involved in it, every step of the way.”
The night ended with a rousing performance of ‘Your the Voice’ by teachers, students, and a few members of the audience.
