Kids takelead

By Nicole Williams
MARAMBA Primary School students have taken a stand on the state of their toilets.
Grade 5 students took part in Kids Conference, a student- led program where schools choose a goal that is specific to their school.
The six students chose to make-over the toilets and identified the Grade 3/4 toilets to be the worst.
“I am very proud of the students’ efforts and it has been a fantastic learning experience for all involved,” said teacher Chris Lodewyke, who is in charge of the project.
After receiving a letter from the students, Bunnings agreed to supply the paint for the make-over and a parent volunteered to do the tricky painting.
The toilets are now prepared and ready for the blue, red, green and yellow paint – school house colours. The students thanked Bunnings and presented them with a certificate of appreciation at an assembly on Monday.
Mrs Lodewyke said she was initially concerned that the students chose the toilets, but added the project came together.
“The students worked as a team and approached each challenge head-on and focused on finding an achievable outcome,” she said. Using surveys, the students discovered that the way students were treating the toilets was the ‘big issue’ and set about changing their behaviour.
Mrs Lodewyke said a student agreement allowed all students to take responsibility for their actions and added that it became a whole school project.
