Barbie fights cholera

By Emma Sun
THE Christmas barbecue held by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was a success, despite being marred by rain.
Church member Naomi White said the barbecue, held at Wilson’s Botanical Garden, was originally cancelled due to weather.
“A number of people still showed up so we had a barbecue and get together anyway,” Ms White said.
Ms White is the wife of Drummond White, whose parents are serving a health mission in Papua New Guinea.
The barbecue was held to raise money for church members in the country affected by cholera.
Pam Mamouney, also a member of the church, said hundreds of people in Papua New Guinea died of cholera related diseases last year.
“Among them were 75 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,” Ms Mamouney said.
“Through donations by members and by contributing the cost of the annual Christmas Festivities, they raised $4400.
“This money will be used to send doctors and supplies to augment funds contributed through the church Humanitarian fund.
“Members all over the world fast for two meals on the first Sunday of each month and this money is used to aid countries in need.”
