A DISASTER expert has said that people who were feeling worried or anxious during the recent heavy rains may have been having a reasonalbe reaction.
Clinical psychologist Doctor Rob Gordon, who specialises in helping people recover from major events such as the Victorian floods earlier this year, said people who felt fear about further flooding during the rain reacted in a normal way.
Dr Gordon said that whenever it rained, it was important for people to look for what is different, as well as what might be similar.
“Anyone who’s worried about repeat flooding would be wise to monitor their local water levels, check with their local authorities or emergency services, and take all necessary precautions,” he said.
“But they should also remind themselves that not every rain event is going to cause a flood – nor is every flood going to be devastating.”
He urged people who find themselves stressing over heavy rain should develop ways to reduce their anxiety and levels of adrenalin through some form of relaxation, perhaps involving slow, deep breathing.
“This should help them to see things more clearly, to notice the true differences from the last time their area flooded, and not be dominated by any unfounded feelings,” he said.
“It’s certainly not too late to talk to others about your problems and seek help.
“If you can’t achieve some calmness using your normal relaxation methods, then it might be a good time to gain some professional help.
“Talk to your local GP or one of the free flood support workers or counselling services in your area, because talking things over often helps change the way we see our problems.”
