Tricky greens defeat Cranny

HEAVY rain on Friday and early Saturday meant bowlers faced slow, holding greens in round five of pennant bowls. Unfortunately the heavy greens didn’t suit the Cranbourne teams with only two of their six sides winning this week.
The top side played away on an unpredictable tiff green against a pumped up MCC side. The Cranny team could not master the nuances of the tricky green that the home side played to perfection. Only Lyn Quigg’s rink of Brian Caddell, Jarrad Boyd and Peter Colthup was able to dominate, while the rinks of Ron Lyfield and Chris Fox struggled to keep in touch after the tea-break.
Ray Travica is becoming known as ‘Lazarus’ as he once again dragged his rink back from brink of defeat, this time to a claim a draw with his last bowl of the day. The loss caused Cranbourne to tumble from top spot to fifth place on the Division 1 ladder.
In a better result for the club, the Division 2 side played host to Glen Waverley 2 and claimed the maximum 18 points, winning on all four rinks. Ken Fulton’s rink of Ray Boskell, Adam Cox and Jack Wylie led the way, winning by 19 shots. The result catapulted the side into top spot of the Division 2 ladder, just one point clear of the South Oakleigh Club.
The third and fourth sides were decimated by unavailable players this week and were not able to overcome strong opposition teams from Hampton Park and Edithvale, going down by six and 37 shots respectively.
Big wins by the rinks of Alan Skurrie and Bill Plumbe at home helped the fifth side overcome the determined Boronia Four side.
The Cranbourne sixth side bore the brunt of missing players from sides above them, and were unable to field a full side, going down on all rinks against a stronger Clayton Five.
