Crestani up for banned ‘race riot’ anniversary rally

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

CASEY councillor Rosalie Crestani has vowed that the Cronulla riots anniversary rally will “go ahead” this weekend, despite a New South Wales Supreme Court judge prohibiting the event on Friday morning 11 December.
Cr Crestani is scheduled to speak at the rally this Saturday 12 December, which was organised by Nicholas Folkes and his far-right Party for Freedom to co-incide with the 10th anniversary of the violent clashes that erupted in southern Sydney on 11 December, 2005.
On Friday, Justice Christine Adamson agreed to prohibit the planned event, after the NSW Police Commissioner launched a court action to block the rally from going ahead.
The court heard that the planned rally risked sparking fresh violence, the Guardian Australia reported.
But Cr Crestani told Star News an event would still be held.
“If the court put a stop on it we’ll find a way for something to proceed,” she said.
“You can’t stop thousands of Australians proceeding with the Australian right for freedom of speech.
“I foresee we will proceed in such a way as to not bring legal ramifications but to have some sort of gathering at some place.”
Cr Crestani said the anniversary rally was a way to “discuss what we can learn from what happened a decade ago”.
Last month Cr Crestani was the MC at the Reclaim Australia rally in Melton, which saw several people arrested among the 1000-odd rival demonstrators.
