IT was a case of so close yet so far for Gleneagles Secondary College runners who were gallantly attempting a world record on 14 October.
With Guinness Book of Records stewards on hand, 628 students tried to break the record for the most runners in a beep test.
The record required 593 students to complete level five of the test – a shuttle run that requires students to complete 20-metre sections in an ever-decreasing time limit.
Agonisingly, 578 made the mark.
Two students, James Harry and Kyle Contencin, excelled. James completed the test up to level 14.4 and Kyle reached level 14 – both feats of elite speed and endurance.
Teacher Roxanne Bell said there was great disappointment but students resolved to break the world record next year.
“Students really appreciated the event. The vibe down there on the day was more electrifying than many anticipated.
“We’re striving to smash the record next year.”
