Berwick College has been shortlisted in two categories in this year’s Victorian Education Excellence Awards.
The college is among the top-three finalists for Outstanding Koorie Education and Outstanding Education Support Team.
It was recognised for its inclusive Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan – including a dedicated Koorie education section on the school website, an annual award for Koorie students and a commitment to Bridging the Gap.
Principal Kerri Bolch said the school’s Koorie students had grown as young people under the program, “proudly active in their Koorie heritage and their community” .
The school’s ConnectED program was nominated under the education support team category.
It is led by four social workers, a chaplain and a registered nurse looking after students’ holistic wellbeing and mental health.
“Our caring and highly effective Wellbeing Team professionally support students who experience barriers to learning because of issues relating to mental health, homelessness, behaviour, grief and friendship,” Ms Bolch said.
“This is the second year our staff have been Victorian Education Excellence Award Finalists, reflecting our continued investment into our local families and the wider community.”
The awards highlight exemplary education and innovation – including staff who go “beyond the call of duty” – in government schools in the state.
Winners will be announced on 27 October.
