Two historic oak trees in Berwick collapsed during the severe storm on Tuesday, 20 November.

The trees stood tall in High Street, Berwick and were adored by the community.

“The Berwick Business Group is shocked and devastated to hear that the trees fell this week in the storm,” Berwick Business Group secretary Magda Dabaco said.

“We had secured funding with the City of Casey to light up these beautiful trees at night in time for Christmas.

“Unfortunately this will not proceed now, but the Berwick Business Group will endeavour to come to an appropriate alternative.”

Berwick resident Donna McKerchar said she is “devastated to see these trees down”.

“I think these trees brought the meaning of heritage of Berwick,” she said.

“They gave the welcome shade from the sun at many memorial ceremonies.

“I’ve taught my children about the age of these trees and the beauty they brought to High Street whilst enjoying a chippy lunch under them. I believe many people would hold personal memories of these.”
