Rotary does it by the book

MORE children and their parents will have their heads in books thanks to a Rotary project to boost literacy in Cardina Shire, the City of Casey and metropolitan Melbourne.
Rotary district government David Piper and his wife Aileen joined members of the Rotary Club of Narre Warren at their weekly meeting last Wednesday and spoke about the importance of the project, which was the brainchild of Pakenham Rotarian Graeme Begg.
Mr Begg said $10, 000 had been raised by Rotary to purchase half of the projected 5000 books required to distribute to mums throughout the district.
Mr Piper explained that literacy was a major focus of the district this year.
“This project demonstrates the magic of Rotarians working together to make a difference in the world,” Mr Piper said.
Mrs Piper expressed to members of the Rotary Club of Narre Warren the importance of the project.
“Literacy in communication and communication is important as it links people together,” she said.
“This project is simple-read aloud to children. Reading aloud to infants is magic. It gives them general knowledge but also creates a bond between parents and their child.”
On behalf of the Narre Warren club, president Roger Hall donated another $500 to the second phase of the project.
He said he thought modern books were magnificent reading material, like the Mem Fox book presented to a Pakenham mother at the launch of the project.
“The books for kids these days not only contain fantastic words but fantastic illustrations” he said.
“The books available are amazing.”
Mem Fox is Australia’s most highly regarded picture-book author. Her first book, Possum Magic, is the best-selling children’s book in Australia, with sales of over four million.
