THE City of Casey observed a minute’s silence at Tuesday’s council meeting in honour of former Mayor of Berwick, John Byron, who recently passed in his sleep.
Mr Byron served as a City of Berwick councillor for 11 years, prior to the amalgamation of Cranbourne and Berwick city councils.
Cr Mick Morland spoke about his generous spirit and joked over his hiring skills, as it was Mr Byron who employed current Casey CEO, Mike Tyler.
Mr Byron served as Mayor in 1984 and is remembered greatly for his support of voluntary groups.
Growing up in Albury, Mr Byron moved around a bit before settling in Casey and starting up Cattlemen’s Equipment, incorporating Thunderbird Electric Fencing on the corner of Webb Street and Princes Highway, Narre Warren.
Later, Mr Byron would become the president of the Webb Street Opportunity Shop.
For his long service toward building global friendships, Mr Byron was presented with an international award, the Dwight D. Einsenhower Medal, and has a Narre Warren reserve named in his honour.
