Brave the shave

A NARRE Warren man is braving the shaver to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave.
Steve Taylor-Madin, 28, said it would be hard to part with his hair, which he had been growing for two years, and shave his beard, which he had been growing for five months.
“I love my long hair and my beard, but my wife does not. She is very excited for me to get rid of it. The only way I am getting rid of it is if I can raise a bunch of money for people less fortunate thnt us,” he said.
Mr Taylor-Madin will be losing his locks during an event at his bicycle shop Riding Way in Bentleigh on 12 March.
Hairdressers from Solutions For Hair, Hughesdale, will be doing the honours.
He will be donating a percentage of sales profit to the cause, as well as accepting contributions for his shave. He hopes to raise $3000.
“I want to help out the youth however I can, and am a big part of organising all types of events and programs for the kids to enjoy and live a healthy lifestyle.”
Blood cancer is Australia’s second biggest cancer killer. One person dies from it every two hours. In 2011, about 2766 Victorians are expected to be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder and thousands of patients and families are already living with a blood cancer.
The Leukaemia Foundation is urging Casey residents to sign up for the World’s Greatest Shave or to sponsor someone who is participating. Anyone can participate by shaving their head, waxing their legs or chest or even wearing a wig.
The money raised will be used to fund cutting-edge research into the causes, treatments and cures for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. It will also fund free patient support services for blood cancer patients and families.
World’s Greatest Shave is on 10-12 March in 2011. To sponsor Mr Taylor-Madin or to sign up visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com or call 1800 500 088. He also has a donation tin set up at Riding Way, 1034a, North Road, Bentleigh East.
