Big in cattle

THE cattle competition on Saturday at the Berwick Show was a great success with exhibitors coming from all across Victoria for the opportunity to compete in the biggest cattle competition in Victoria outside the Melbourne Royal Show.
Nine exhibitors showed over 30 animals and Red Angus was the feature breed for the first time at the Berwick Show.

There were several breeds at the show which had not competed in the Berwick Show for many years, if ever, including Belgium Blue, Bazadaise, Blonde D’Aquitaine, Belted Galloways and Santa Gertrudis, which increased the competition for the Interbreed in the afternoon.
The Supreme Exhibit of the 2011 Berwick Show – The John Lloyd Trophy – was Mawarra Westlife, exhibited by Peter Sykes from Longford Victoria, after tough competition from Spencer Family Coco Pink Floyd.
Over 30 competitors were in the Junior Handlers category, 10 in the Junior Judging and 15 in the Marty Alberni Herdsperson Award.
The Marty Alberni Herdsperson award was won by Jessica Taylor of Warragul.
The award is named in memory of Marty Alberni – life member of the Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society and is judged on all aspects of entrants’ participation in the cattle show.
The Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society would like to thank all of the volunteers and exhibitors, as well as the sponsors of the cattle competition, including Irwin Stockfeeds, Clover Cottage, Spencer Family Breeders, Cornells Prime Stockfeeds, Alex Scott and Staff, ProPharma, and Akoonah Park committee of management.
