AUSTRALIAN athletes Cathy Freeman and Dale Stevenson will be opening the Casey Fields Athletic Centre on Saturday night.
The $6 million centre includes a synthetic athletics track, lighting for night competitions and undercover seating for 1000 people.
Athletics Victoria club development manager Tim Crosbie says the facility is one of Victoria’s best and is a great venue for Casey athletes.
“It’s going to be the second most important running complex in Victoria for athletics behind Albert Park,” Crosbie said.
“This is a great push forward for athletics in Casey and it will definitely boost participation in the area.”
Freeman retired in 2003 as one of Australia’s greatest athletes, winning gold at the Sydney Olympics in the 400m and four Commonwealth Games gold medals across her career.
Stevenson won a bronze medal in the shot put at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
The event starts at 7.15pm and includes a program of 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m and sprint hurdles.
