An Upper House MP’s five-year campaign to secure funding for water safety programs for the multicultural community has paid dividends.
The Victorian State Budget will give $1.3 million over the next four years to Life Saving Victoria to fund the Multicultural Water Safety Program.
“The program will provide water safety education, training and swimming activities to Victoria’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities,” Inga Peulich, State Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region said.
The funding comes after a number of drownings in local Kingston and Frankston beaches from the south-east multicultural community.
“To secure $1.3 million for a multicultural water safety program is fantastic and will hopefully save lives.”
Ms Peulich said the need for children to learn to swim and understand the dangers of water was crucial for their safety.
The $1.3 million is part of a $9.5 million in the Victorian budget for Life Saving Victoria.
Life Saving Victoria has also received $6 million over the next three years for clubhouse upgrades, $1 million over the next four years for Life Saving Victoria’s Volunteer Support Network, and $1.2 million over the next four years for Life Saving Victoria Clubs assistance.
