Flag party for brave Burras

Warburton Millgrove snatched the Outer East Division 1 flag from the jaws of defeat in Saturday’s grand final against Seville.

Trailing for most of the afternoon, a Brock Caneva goal at the 18-minute mark of the final term put the Burras in front for good.

The top three of Pakenham, Seville and Warburton Millgrove were hard to separate all season and it was only fitting that the premiership would come down to the wire.

Goals were incredibly difficult to come by, especially in the second half, leading to a close margin and an arm-wrestle around the contest.

The Blues led at every break and looked tough to beat after they held a 15-point buffer late in the third quarter.

Nerves in the high-pressure environment were evident with the Burras managing nine scores in the last, but eight were behinds.

However, the final desperation rally was enough to claim the 6.16(52) to 6.12(48) victory that pushed the Warburton Millgrove faithful into pure jubilation.

Caneva’s late heroics not only earned his side the premiership, but he was also judged best afield for his efforts.

Thomas Baker was outstanding as usual with a performance of 26 disposals, seven marks, four tackles and a goal.

Josh Sharp was the only player in the game with multiple goals as he slotted a pair for the premiers.

PREMIER DIVISION

Olinda Ferny Creek overcame a poor first quarter to steamroll Woori Yallock and punch its ticket to Saturday’s grand final.

The Bloods fell behind by just under three goals at quarter time before clawing back and hitting the front in the second.

A five-goal-to-one onslaught in the third from Olinda Ferny Creek pushed the difference out to 26 points at the final intermission, setting a task for the Tigers.

Woori Yallock couldn’t recover and the Bloods piled on another five majors in the last to run out 16.14(110) to 10.11(71) victors.

Former AFL player Matthew Scharenberg was the best on ground in victory with the superstar booting five.

Woori Yallock’s Taylor Gibson also managed a bag of five majors to finish his season tally on 98 goals.

Olinda Ferny Creek will now set its sights to the big dance as a rematch with Wandin awaits.

The grand final is at Healesville’s Don Road Sporting Complex on Saturday, commencing at 2:20pm.
