Blues back from the brink

All eyes were on the match between HSD and Parkfield in DDCA Turf 2 and it delivered for the spectators with the Blues winning the match in a reverse outright result.

On day one, the Cobras batted first and were bowled out for just 78 with Jude Owen (22) one of just three players to reach double figures.

The ask was simple for Parkfield who were 1/38 in reply and cruising towards a win, but they collapsed badly and lost 7/18 to be all out for 76 and lose the first innings by two runs, with Brett Hookey coming in clutch for HSD.

The Cobras batted again and were 2/27 at the end of the first day, which was soon to be 4/30 as the Parkfield Reserve pitch continued to misbehave.

After taking a 5fa in the first innings for Parkfield, Madusha Croos took four of the first five wickets to finish with figures of 4/23 off 15 overs and a total of 9/50 for the match.

Despite HSD all-rounder Anuda Akmeemana (42) finding some form, runs were hard to come by for the Cobras as they were bowled out for 106 off 49.2 overs.

The task for a reverse outright was set for Parkfield, 109 runs needed to secure top spot on the ladder.

The Blues worked hard in the chase, but it was never going to be easy as the Cobras struck consistently throughout the innings to leave Parkfield in serious trouble at 6/73, with time also playing a factor.

Sam Beadsworth (33) was the only player to look comfortable on day two and he was back in the sheds watching on nervously.

With only three runs needed, Shane Cooray (19) was run out and the Blues were seven wickets down, could the Cobras produce a miracle?

A boundary from Sahan Jayawardana (15 not out) said no to that question, as Parkfield held on to win by three wickets in a dramatic finish on day two.

In other games, an unbeaten century from Krishan Alang (100 not out) guided Coomoora to an important win against Silverton, chasing down the target of 209 to win by five wickets.

Coomoora looked good late on day one and finished with a strong start at 2/74 which put them in the box seat to claim victory, which they did.

Jarrod Munday (40) was the other patient performer in the run chase, taking his season tally to an impressive 245 runs from four outings – Kalapu Gamage (3/27) and Varinder Kirk (2/68) were the pick of the Bakers’ bowlers.

North Dandenong easily chased Cranbourne’s total of 165 and pushed on even further to make a huge score of 316 on day two, before the Eagles finished the match at 3/99 in the second innings.

After being bowled out for 110 in the first innings, Lyndale went down to Narre Warren as the Magpies won by two wickets on the first innings result, where they posted 8/131d.

The second day of the contest was a stalemate as Lyndale pushed on and scored 7/208 before declaring and giving themselves a chance of an outright victory, but they only managed to take six wickets as Narre Warren batted to survive.
