CRANBOURNE took home the all-abilities football premiership with a hard-earned 78-point victory over Chadstone.
Cranbourne won 12.15 (87) to 1.3 (9) at Mazenod Central Reserve in Glen Waverley on Sunday.
The premiership caps a run of great success for the team. Formed in 2009, the club has played in all three grand finals since – but this was the first time it has tasted success.
Cranbourne team manager Rita Kellett said the win was fantastic for the team, who were doing what they love.
“These boys are living their dreams. They’re mad football fans and love their AFL, so to run onto the ground, especially in a grand final, is a dream come true for them,” Kellett said.
“They played strongly as a team and we had heaps of people there.
“We hadn’t beaten this team (Chadstone) before and this was the first time we won the flag.
“The boys were fantastic. It was played in fantastic spirit.
“Travis Milton-Smith was best on ground. He kicked three goals and every time you looked he was touching the ball.
“Captain Gareth (Alsem) and vice-captain Steven (Spence) played well. And everyone else played wonderfully too.
“They’re an excellent bunch of guys; you couldn’t get better.
“We’ve been in the league for three years and been in three grand finals. We finally got a grand final win after two losses. They can’t take it too seriously, it’s just a game and they’re meant to have fun.”
With Cranbourne’s All Abilities coach David Paten retiring, the club is looking for a new coach – and also for new players.
“Anyone who is 14 to 40 years old can play. Anyone who would like to play is welcome to come down,” Kellett said.
