BOOKS decorated the gardens of the Berwick Chisholm Institute of TAFE, as students entertained more than 40 children for Children’s Book Week.
The outdoor area was divided into eight zones, each with a different book theme, including animals, gardening and woodwork, underwater, art and craft, under 2s, science and two quiet areas.
The event was organised by VET Cert III Children’s Services second year students as part of their final assessment and with the help of first year students, demonstrated what they learned through two years of study.
Second year student Hayley Cameron said the day, which catered for children up to the age of six, really tested every student’s knowledge and ability.
“We had to interact with all the children, hold their attention and organise different activities for different age groups,” she said.
“Everything was organised by us, we had to consider health and safety such as first aid and sunscreen as well.
“The teachers walked around all day and we were all assessed.”
More than 40 students were involved in the event, which Hayley said went very successfully.
“You don’t realise when you get the work how long it’s going to take – it took weeks and weeks to organise and we were really worried about how many people will turn up,” she said.
“On the day, it was an awesome turnout and it was interesting to see the different age groups and what activities they enjoyed and what entertained them.
“The parents gave us awesome feedback and the teachers were really impressed. I thought the day was really rewarding, it was great to organise and see the end product.”
