Hoons wreak street havoc

By Lia Bichel
Narre Warren South resident Nick Hatch, 31, is calling for speed humps to be installed at Langbourne Drive after numerous “close-calls” and a near fatality involving his parents and son.
The father of two children, aged 2 and 5, said his parked car was hit by a hoon driver, and his parents and his son had to jump out of the way of a speeding P-plater recently.
He said 95 per cent of speeding drivers were P-platers and the hooning mostly occurred between 3.30pm and 7pm.
“It happens when young blokes finish work and are on their way home,” he said.
“They cut through our street and get enjoyment out of sliding around the big S bend.”
Mr Hatch said he would not let his children play in the front yard, fearing they would get hit by a car.
He wrote a letter to Cr Sam Aziz, voicing his concern and pleading for help.
“My parents and my son were almost hit by a driver who nearly lost it around the bend. We need something installed to slow them down,” Mr Hatch said.
“This has got to the point where drivers are going that fast that someone will be killed.
“We don’t need this stress. We had our house gutted on Black Saturday.”
Mr Hatch said he contacted the Casey Council hoon hotline and the police, but nothing has been done to address his safety concerns.
“We have tried every avenue,” Mr Hatch said.
“All the street needs is one speed hump which can’t cost too much money and maybe some more lights because there is only one street light.”
“If nothing is done, there will be a fatality.”
Cr Aziz asked Casey Council officers to investigate the possibility of installing traffic calming devices on the street and to notify Victoria Police of the problem.
“These residents have had enough trauma for a life time. We need to respond to their concern,” Cr Aziz said.
“We need to respond to their concerns and we need to take action.”
