Man struck with bottle

By Rebecca Fraser
A 21-YEAR-OLD man remains in intensive care following a brawl in Narre Warren last Thursday.
The Narre Warren resident suffered a major stroke after the altercation and did not receive medical attention until the following morning, when he was rushed to hospital in an ambulance.
Police said the incident occurred between 9.30pm and 10.30pm outside the bus stop and taxi rank near the Fountain Gate Hotel.
Police from Narre Warren CIU are investigating the matter and have called on any witnesses to come forward.
Detectives believe the man was struck in the head several times with a glass bottle and also kicked in the head during the altercation.
Following the incident, the man went to his girlfriend’s house and told her he had been playing around with three friends when things turned serious and a fight broke out between them.
Police said the man may have known the trio, but they doubted they were close friends.
Police said it also appeared one man had tried to break a longneck bottle and stab the 21-year-old, causing a minor wound.
Detective Senior Constable Brian Whitehead said police believed the 21-year-old had consumed more alcohol before he went to sleep.
Police said the man awoke about 6am the following morning and was convulsing and having a fit.
He was rushed to the Monash Medical Centre in a coma and has since undergone neurosurgery to alleviate blood clots to the brain.
Det Sen Const Whitehead said security footage showed about 10 people had witnessed the altercation, and he urged them to come forward and contact police.
He said it appeared the men had been “mucking around” when things went too far and turned violent.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Det Sen Const Brian Whitehead of Narre Warren CIU on 9705 3111 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
A spokesperson for the Monash Medical Centre said the man was still in intensive care in a critical but stable condition.
The News tried unsuccessfully to contact the man’s family.
