Police assault, teens charged

A NARRE Warren police officer received bruising to the face last Saturday after being set upon by a group of teenagers.
District Inspector Robert Hill said police were called to parkland at the intersection of Narre Warren Cranbourne and Centre Road about 9.20pm where a group of 20 males were seen drinking.
He said police arrested a young man they saw urinating in the street, and placed him in the divisional van.
“A second man has then made an attempt to rescue his friend from the police van and a violent struggle has ensued. During the course of this an officer has suffered blows to the face,” Insp Hill said.
He said police were then forced to call for back up as the youths circled the police car.
The police officer was later taken to the Dandenong Valley Hospital for treatment.
A 16-year-old from Berwick and another 16-year-old from Narre Warren South have since been charged with various offences including assaulting police, being drunk and disorderly and for offensive behaviour.
Insp Hill said the pair would face court at a later date and this incident highlighted the dangers that police officers could sometimes face.
He said people needed to abide by City of Casey’s bylaws that prohibit people from drinking in public places.
