Hillsmeade sings the blues

STUDENTS at a Narre Warren South school definitely know how to sing the blues.
The Hillsmeade Primary School senior band and choir students recently travelled to Hamer Hall at the Victorian Arts Centre to display their musical talents.
They joined more than 20 schools as part of the Southern Metropolitan Great Southern Sounds concert with the school’s students performing the ‘Birth of the Blues’ on stage.
The Hillsmeade choir had nine representatives from grades three and four and there were 17 children playing in the band, ranging from grades three to six and playing instruments such as flutes and recorders, trumpets, keyboards, glockenspiels, marimbas and drums. Students also enjoyed a variety of acts including brass bands, string ensembles, choirs, dances and even a circus act.
The concert included a mixture of primary and secondary students, giving the Hillsmeade musicians something to aspire to. Students began with an early-morning rehearsal with the concert finishing with a grand finale of all the schools, comprising more than 700 students, up on stage singing several songs.
Despite a late night, most of the Hillsmeade children were at school bright and early on Thursday ready to talk about their next performance.
