Guides boom

By Chris Brown
GUIDE groups in the Casey area are booming.
Region leader Gail Alexander said two new units had opened at Narre Warren South in the last two months and there had been requests for information for most other districts.
Mrs Alexander said the renewed interest came after 15 years of declining numbers.
“It’s because parents are looking for something that develops the whole girl and not just a single aspect,” she said.
“Guides offers a chance to do something different all the time. You’re not just playing basketball.”
Mrs Alexander said guides had changed in the past 30 years.
“The basics are the same, the laws are the same, the promise is the same. The changes are it’s become more girl-driven and we go outdoors more. We just do things the girls are interested in,” she said.
This means more activities, such as the unit that has been gliding recently.
However, guides would like extra leaders.
“We do have a lot of leaders but, to be honest, we need more,” Mrs Alexander said.
She said leaders need enthusiasm, a willingness to get involved and have fun and the ability to relate well to girls.
“What you get out of it for yourself makes it worthwhile getting involved,” she said.
Leaders also need to be female, but men can be involved in support roles.
Leaders are trained and given a mentor and can earn certificates to recognise their position.
Anyone interested in becoming a leader should contact Gail Alexander on 5996 1862.
