Scammers offer cheap flights

ALARM bells rang out across the internet this week as the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) issued a warning regarding a Sydney based website offering discounted flights online.
According to ASIC, the website was operated by scammers posing as a legitimate company called New Flights Limited.
However no such company name has ever been registered or even exists. It appears the scammers were actually operating out of the US, and were booking and purchasing tickets for customers using stolen credit cards.
Since this discovery, this particular website has since been shut down. However, people should be very cautious when using services such as this as copycat sites could quite easily begin popping up online.
With many agencies offering competitive flight and accommodation packages online, you could easily find yourself getting stung by scammers if you were to carelessly give out your credit card details without further investigation.
If you do happen to stumble upon a website that you suspect may be fraudulent or find yourself a deal that seems too good to be true, the ASIC has allowed users to conduct a free search on the National Names Index to determine the legitimacy of the company or organisation in question.
You can do this by either visiting their website at http://www.asic.gov.au or by calling 1300 300 630.
