Street sewerage plan canned

THREE Narre Warren North streets will not get a sewerage system after a majority of residents canned the idea.
Casey Council has decided not to proceed with special charge schemes to have a reticulated sewerage system installed in MacKeller Close and Gori and Renda Courts, on the basis of cost and resident response.
Based on 15 properties on MacKellar Close, the new system would cost each household $27,000.
The council sent all homes a preliminary estimate of the costs that would be levied against their properties and a questionnaire to indicate whether they were in favour of the scheme or not.
Thirteen households replied and said they were not in favour, and two did not respond.
Based on 15 properties in Gori Court and Renda Court, the cost of the proposed scheme would have been $24,000 each.
Fourteen households did not support the initiative, with only one home in favour.
Casey deputy mayor Rob Wilson moved the motion not to proceed at last Tuesday’s council meeting and said the cost was so exorbitant that a majority of residents were not in favour.
Cr Wilson questioned if there was any way residents could get the system cheaper.
Casey manager engineering David Richardson said any scheme to get a cheaper service through South East Water’s backlog system would take a long time.
