COULD you be the next John Marsden or J.K Rowling?
Well now is your chance with budding young writers urged to enter Doveton’s annual short story and poetry competition.
The Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation, in conjunction with the Friends of the Doveton Library, will host the annual event, with winning entrants and their families invited to a special award presentation night in November.
On the night, the winners will be given the opportunity to read aloud their winning entries and will be offered supper and chance to mingle afterwards with other keen scribes.
All entrants will receive a certificate of participation.
The competition has two categories: a short-story and a poetry section that has been divided into two age groups: eight to 11 years and 12 to 15 years.
Cash prizes are also on offer, with three equal prizes of $30, in both writing categories for the younger age group.
Entrants in the 12 to 15-year-old age group have the opportunity to win $50 for first prize, $40 for second prize and $30 for third prize, in both categories.
There are no set subjects or topics, so entrants can write about absolutely anything and let their imagination run wild or write about real experiences.
Short stories in the younger age group can be between 50 and 250 words and for the 12 to 15-year-old category 250 to 750 words.
Poetry entrants can be up to 20 lines in the younger age group and up to 40 lines for older entrants.
The original works must be received by Friday, 6 October. People can collect entry forms from any of the Casey-Cardinia Libraries or at www.cclc.vic.gov.au on-line.
All entries are free and there is only one entry per category per writer.
Proof of age and residence of the winners will be required and entrants must be members of the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation.
