Rewards in store for turning green

YOUNG people aged 16 to 23 across Australia have until 4 August to apply for Commonwealth Bank green ambassadorships that reward young people who actively assist or protect their local environment.
Berwick student Ali Majoka was selected as an ambassador last year, in recognition of his active involvement in promoting the urban forest project, an initiative of the Berwick Secondary College environment committee.
The project aimed to revegetate a paddock on college grounds and create a food garden, an indigenous forest with pathways and public access.
The 17-year-old has urged other young environmental enthusiasts to apply to become an ambassador.
He said ambassadors received a Commonwealth Bank green ambassadors pack, which includes a digital camera, CVA membership and the opportunity to take part in a CVA better earth project as well as a certificate in active volunteering.
Mr Majoka travelled to Tasmania, as part of the award spending five days at Cradle Mountain.
There he made many friends from across the world and said he hoped to visit one in Germany next year.
The keen environmentalist hopes to study science at university next year and join an environmental committee.
“It is good to explore and appreciated the environment but we also need to help make it better,” Mr Majoka said.
To apply for a Commonwealth Bank green ambassadorships call Conservation Volunteers Australia on 1800 032 501. Winners will be announced in early September.
