Cars can be a deathtrap, CFA warns

THE onset of warm weather has prompted a stern warning from the CFA for parents to avoid leaving young children unattended in the car.
Lieutenant David Beard of the Narre Warren CFA said the unit received about two callouts a fortnight to rescue children from cars.
In a recent incident, CFA crews were called out to the carpark at Bunnings Warehouse in Narre Warren where a young toddler had been left unattended.
Concerned passers by alerted emergency services to the incident but the parent returned to the car as the CFA arrived on scene.
“Even if you think you are only going to go in to the shops for a few minutes don’t do it – take your children with you,” Lt Beard said.
“On a 25 degree day within five or 10 minutes it can reach 35 degrees inside.
“If people leave their kids inside the car on a 35 degree day in 10 minutes they will probably be dead.
“It is a serious issue.”
