Aussies win Chinese medals

EVERYBODY was kung fu fighting when seven Berwick athletes travelled to China to compete in the wu shu world championships recently.
Seven students from the Golden Lion Academy in Berwick exceeded their highest expectations when they competed in the seven-day tournament held in the city of Zhengzhou.
Wu shu is a general term that encompasses various types of Chinese martial arts including kung fu and tai chi and the local athletes brought home nine gold, four silver and one bronze medal in the various events.
Golden Lion Academy senior master Charles Tsui-Po said the results were outstanding for a team from Australia, who were competing against some of the best athletes in the world.
“We had six women and one man compete and they all did really well,” Charles said.
The Berwick students ranged in age from 30 to 55 and competed in the bare hand and weapon categories.
A highlight of the trip for the touring party was a visit to the ancient Shaolin Temple – the birthplace of all martial arts.
Mr Tsui-Po said wu shu art trained the human mind and body in several ways, including the improvement of coordination, balance and mental concentration.
