Footy players get an unexpected break

PRE-SEASON training just got a lot harder for the Casey-Cardinia footballers banned from training on the majority of sporting ovals due to the ongoing drought.
Casey Council officials announced the restrictions last week in a move that will result in no football training being conducted on grounds before February.
The decision has been designed to reduce wear on the ovals and make sure the grounds remain in a suitable condition throughout the current cricket season and 2007 football season.
Casey arts and leisure manager Robyn Bowen said the council’s priority was to enable all residents to be able to enjoy their chosen sport throughout the drought.
“It is vitally important that we now reduce the amount of foot traffic and minimise the impact of the water restrictions on the dry turf for the 2007 summer and winter seasons,” Ms Bowen said.
Ovals that have access to recycled water, including Casey Fields and Cranbourne soccer fields, will not be restricted in usage.
“The City of Casey and some neighbouring councils are taking proactive measures to manage municipal sporting ovals to ensure that 2007 winter contact sports, including Australian football, rugby and soccer, can be played on a safe surface,” she said.
Officials will be able to discuss water restriction issues affecting their sporting clubs during a special meeting to be held by Casey.
The forum will take place at council chambers on Magid Drive in Narre Warren from 7.30pm to 9pm.
