A RE-ELECTED Labor government would provide $500,000 to a community sports stadium in the Timbarra Estate.
Sport and Recreation Minister Justin Madden joined Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan for the funding announcement in Berwick yesterday (Wednesday).
Casey Council will also contribute to the project, which involves a new three-court basketball stadium hosting a variety of sports including basketball, volleyball, callisthenics and futsal. The money is set to come from savings from the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
“This important development will provide a great boost to sport and recreation in the Casey area,” Mr Donnellan said. “Timbarra students and local athletes will be dunking, spiking, tumbling and dribbling in style in the new Timbarra Community Stadium.”
Mr Madden said the Games left a lasting legacy for Victoria with major upgrades to sports venues and sports equipment distributed across the state.
“The Casey community is the latest to benefit from the incredible success of the Commonwealth Games,” he said.
Mr Madden said a re-elected Bracks Government would also consider any more funding applications from the council for the project.
“Almost $26 million of Commonwealth Games savings is being ploughed back into Victorian sport,” Mr Madden said.
