Camping boost for Guides group

By Rebecca Fraser
NARRE Warren South’s growing guiding movement has now received a cash boost.
On Tuesday night Strathard Ward councillor Lorraine Wreford presented the group of 12 with a cheque for $283 which will be used to buy more camping equipment.
District leader Sandra Roach welcomed the donation and said the money would help the group conduct indoor camping activities next year.
“The money will help provide a really good camping experience for our girls,” Ms Roach said.
“As we are a new group we need to build up our equipment.
“We will be using the money to buy tea towels, bath mats and other items to put together a camping kit,” she said.
Ms Roach has been involved in Guides for 25 years.
She received the City of Casey Citizen of the Year 2004 award for her contribution to guiding and the Wattle Award, one of guiding’s highest awards honours.
“I just love being involved in guiding,” she said.
“I have learnt a lot and met a lot of nice people on the way. I would love more people to come along and be leaders and have fun with us.
“Of course they do not have to stay for 25 years like me.”
Cr Wreford said the local guiding movement provided young girls with a diverse range of opportunities.
“Not everyone wants to do the same things and guiding offers young girls variety and provides girls with a lot of different opportunities in the community,” she said.
Anyone interested in becoming a Guide leader or joining the group, phone Sandra Roach on 9705 9195.
