NINE local sports champions have received a welcomed financial boost from the Federal Government to help them realise their dreams.
The athletes – from La Trobe electorate – each received $5000 from the Local Sporting Champions Grants to cover costs on their way to achieving future sporting success.
The athletes were selected because they competed in their respective sports at state, national and/or international championships.
La Trobe MP Laura Smyth congratulated the nine athletes from her electorate who received the award.
“This group of champions are determined to reach their goals in their chosen fields,” Ms Smyth said.
“For many people sport is a great way to keep fit, escape the house for some fresh air and make life-long friendships.
“These local athletes are dreaming big and enjoying the new opportunities to compete in their sports at the highest levels. These grants will help them and their families to fund future trips, accommodation, uniforms and the equipment they need to participate and succeed.”
Thirteen-year-old Berwick road walker Rachael Guy, who represented Victoria at this year’s Australia Road Walking Championships, was one of the recipients. She said she would use her funding to pay for travel to next year’s Australian Junior Championships in Perth.
“At the moment I am going to compete, but because it is in Perth this grant has made all the difference,” Rachael said.
“I was very surprised and excited to receive the award. I love walking because it keeps you fit and it is very competitive.”
Renton Lewis, a 16-year-old from Beaconsfield Upper, was thrilled to receive the award after representing Australia at this year’s triathlon would championships in Auckland in October.
“I just love the sport’s three different disciplines and I love being active,” Renton said.
“I am very happy to receive this grant.”
Local athletes and teams have until 28 February to apply for the next round of Local Sporting Champions Grants.
Other La Trobe residents receiving the grants were Nikolaos French of Upper Ferntree Gully who plays ice hockey, Samantha Prime from Narre Warren – cross country, Kristelle and Timothy Vanderwolf from Upwey who both play inline hockey, Jasmine Irshad from Boronia for road walking, Madeleine Di‐Blasio from Belgrave South -for gymnastics and Alison Youlten from Belgrave who plays volleyball.
