Club serves a tennis treat

By Marc McGowan
HAMPTON Park Tennis Club will be hoping to capitalise on Australian Open fever when it holds its club open day this Sunday.
It is an annual event and after attracting big numbers last year, club open day coordinator Lis Drew has high expectations for this weekend’s turnout.
“Last year, we probably got between 80 and 100 people,” she said.
“We’ve advertised a little more through schools this year, so we’re expecting those kind of numbers again and are hoping for even more, obviously.”
The open day is free to the public and aims to encourage people to play the sport.
Tennis Victoria has provided generic posters for tennis clubs to use for their own purpose, as well as supplying drink bottles, hats and tennis balls.
On top of the handouts, club coach Tim Symons will be running tennis-related activities, there will be a fastest serve and a hit-the-target competition, social tennis and a barbecue lunch with refreshments.
Water restrictions are likely to limit the club to the use of three courts, but Ms Drew is hoping to utilise all six of Hampton Park’s en-tout-cas surfaces.
“We would be able to operate on six, but we wouldn’t be able to water them all,” she said.
“We could even have some other little games (on the other courts), so long as we don’t need to water them and there is not a lot of running around.”
For further information, contact Lis Drew on 0412 558 274.
