It’s a recipe for togetherness

GOOD food could be the way to the heart of Doveton and Eumemmerring residents with a cooking initiative breaking down barriers.
The Gardens, Kitchens, Togetherness program is designed to enable people from all different cultures to come together around gardening, cooking, conversation and shared interests.
The Doveton Eumemmerring Neighbourhood Renewal (DENR) group has combined with the Eastern Region Mental Health Association (ERMHA) to bring the program to the wider Doveton and Eumemmerring community.
A cultural community kitchen will work in conjunction with a vegetable garden and a catering service to bring the people together.
The program, which has been running since September last year, has resulted in cuisine from all over the world being cooked.
Vietnam, El Salvador, Australia, China and Singapore are just a few of the different countries’ culinary delights that have been served up by residents to their neighbours.
ERMHA are helping with the program after studies revealing people who are socially isolated have a much higher risk of dying from various causes than those who have strong relationships with friends, family and the wider community.
The next Gardens, Kitchens, Togetherness program will take place on Monday, 26 March at the DENR centre at Oak Avenue, Doveton. For more details contact Dina Jaballah on 9791 4760.
