Plea to get snapping

A RED light camera is one step closer to being installed at a busy Narre Warren intersection near a primary school, after a petition was delivered to State Parliament on the behalf of residents.
The 407-signature petition, presented to Parliament by Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan, is calling on the State Government to fund a red light camera at the intersection of Ernst Wanke Road and Narre Warren North Road, making it safer for road users to access Mary MacKillop Primary School.
Mr Donnellan said he was pleased the issue was gaining traction.
“Minister Wells has indicated to me that the installation of a red light camera will be considered at the next committee meeting, scheduled for September this year,” he said.
“This is great news for local residents who have been overwhelmingly supportive of this intersection being made safer.”
As reported by the News in May, many residents are concerned about drivers who run the red light at this intersection on a continual basis. Mr Donnellan said motorists who threaten lives with reckless behaviour deserve to be caught.
“The intersection is already busy, and will be only busier if the plans for a major supermarket and shops on the south-west corner go ahead,” he said.
“Residents deserve to feel safe on our roads, whether they are in car, on a bike or walking to and from school.”
A Department of Justice spokesperson said this particular camera request was currently being considered by the Camera Site Selection Committee, chaired by Victoria Police with representatives from the Department of Justice and VicRoads.
“The committee considers proposed fixed camera sites based on criteria determined with the assistance of the Monash University Accident Research Centre and the Australian Road Research Board, two independent experts in road safety,” the spokesperson said.
“The committee looks at the crash history of a site, as well as factors such as engineering suitability, before determining if a fixed camera will be installed.”
